Expert Tips to Follow on Your Spa Day

Those new to the spa world may have a few questions about how the whole relaxation experience works. Many people have apprehensions about nudity, massage or other treatments. Understanding a few basics can help ease anxiety and ensure you have the experience you desire. Whether you're trying to discover new spa products or book an appointment, there are a few things the first timer should know.

Know the Services

Most day spas offer a number of treatments, such as:
  • Massage
  • Pedicures and manicures
  • Facials
  • Waxing and hair removal
  • Body wraps and other treatments
A newbie may be easily overwhelmed looking at the menu of services. Take massage, for example. There are different types of massages, add-ons like hot rocks, varying lengths of time and different levels of intensity.
One of the best ways to book a trip to the spa you will enjoy is to call ahead of time and speak to someone who can help suggest services that will meet your needs. Some spas even offer tours you can take so you are familiar with the set-up, services and therapists. Let the staff know what kind of experience you are looking for: relaxation, pain relief or a day of beautification, for example. The staff is there to ensure you get what you want, so take advantage of their know-how.

Know Your Limits

People get naked at spas. From the massage table to the sauna, nudity is almost a certainty at any given spa. However, there is no hard and fast rule about taking off your clothes. If you are not comfortable being naked in front of other people, you don’t have to be. There are massages you can enjoy while still wearing clothes. If nudity is a concern for you, simply talk to the staff about the treatments you want to ensure that clothing will not interfere with the treatment’s effectiveness.

Etiquette

A rookie spa-goer should know there are a few rules to abide by in order to have a relaxing experience – and so you don’t disrupt someone else’s. One chief rule is to turn off your phone. You are at the spa to enjoy a massage, not do work. Additionally, a ringing phone is a distraction for other people who are trying to shut out the outside world. Turn off your phone’s volume. Better yet, leave it in a locker.
Another key to good spa etiquette is to tip each therapist or staff member who provides you a service. If you get a massage, manicure and eyebrow wax, you should tip each person. Typically, a 15 to 20 percent tip is acceptable. If you have a gift certificate, inquire at the front desk if the tip has been included. Lastly, some spas tack on a service fee to your bill. However, not all of that money makes its way to the service providers. When in doubt, either provide a 15 percent tip or talk to the receptionist about how the service fee works.

A trip to the spa is supposed to be a relaxing experience that leaves you refreshed. By knowing a few of the basics, you can ensure you enjoy the services while staying in your comfort zone.
