Compagnie des Etablissements Eiffel |
The Tower design was brought forth in 1884. It was aimed to
celebrate the centennial of the French revolution which took place in 1789, when
French citizens rebelled against king Louis XVI, who was then overthrown. This
Uprising lead to the creation of the first Republic. The original design came
from Maurice Koechlin, a civil engineer who worked for the "Compagnie des
Etablissements Eiffel", a firm owned by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel who had the
tower named after him. After years of controversy and critics, Gustave Eiffel
was finally granted the commissioning of his project. The construction of the
edifice started in January 1887 and was inaugurated by Eiffel and French
government officials on the 31st of march 1889.
The World Wars
Era
When built, the tower was supposed to be a temporary exhibition. One
of the major requirements of its design was the ability to be easily demolished.
Eiffel was granted a permit for his tower to stand for 20 years. When that
permit expired, city officials wanted to tear it down but they soon realized
that the tower was a valuable and strategic building for radio transmissions and
interceptions. During world war 1 indeed, the tower was used to jam German radio
communications.
Tower Popularity
Since the time the monument was
built until today, the Eiffel tower attracted more than 200,000,000 visitors
from all over the globe and still continues to yearly bring more than 7 millions
tourists to Paris. No other monument in the world generates such yearly incomes
(nearly $29,000,000) because of tourists. It is today, the symbol of the French
Capital itself, especially the so known football Club Paris Saint Germain (2013
French League Champions) which as the tower as part of their
